Wilhelm Walch Südtirol
Wilhelm Walch Winery – The soul of South Tyrol in a glass
At the foot of the Dolomites, where the peaks touch the sky and the sun bathes the steep slopes in a soft, golden light, lies Tramin – a place that has always been steeped in the spirit of wine. Here, in this historic wine village, lies the Wilhelm Walch Winery. Since 1869, the Walch family has not only been writing its own history here, but also an important chapter in South Tyrolean wine culture.
A bold beginning: from dream to legacy
It began with a bold step. Wilhelm Walch, a visionary entrepreneur from Vorarlberg, found himself facing a closed door when he wanted to expand his distillery. Instead of waiting, he opened a new door – to the south. With his five adult children in tow, he moved to South Tyrol and acquired a disused Jesuit monastery in Tramin. This was not merely a business purchase; it was the beginning of a symbiosis between a determined family and a region that seemed destined for winegrowing.
With entrepreneurial foresight, he acquired the best vineyard sites in Tramin and Kaltern. His pulse – faster and more ambitious than the times – shaped one of the largest and most prestigious wineries in the region within a few years. This spirit of progress, underpinned by respect for the land, still beats at the heart of the estate today.
In the Garden of Eden: where the mountains embrace the wine
South Tyrol is often described as the ‘Garden of Eden’ of the Alps. Here, on the sun-kissed southern edge of the mountains, the Dolomites create a unique microclimate. They are mighty guardians that keep out the cold north winds and, at the same time, sensitive directors of the temperature play: warm, sunny days give the grapes strength and aroma, while the cool mountain nights provide the lively freshness and precise acidity that make South Tyrolean wines so distinctive.
The Walch family's vineyards extend over altitudes of 250 to 700 metres. They are steep, often heroically laid out, and rooted in soils that tell the story of the Dolomite rock – calcareous, sandy, loamy. Each location whispers a different mineral note into the grapes. The uncompromising, gentle manual labour in these steep plots is a promise: only the healthiest grapes are allowed to make the journey to the cellar.
The bridge of time: between monastery walls and gravity
A walk through the winery's cellars is a journey through time. In the historic core, in the vaulted, underground walls of the former monastery, the spirit of the monks who pressed wine here four centuries ago still lingers. Here they stand: the hand-carved, majestic oak barrels. They are more than just containers; they are wooden archives in which the stories of generations and vintages have been collected. In their silence, the wines mature to a complexity that only patience can bestow.
Just a few steps away, modernity opens up. Built in 2015, the fermentation cellar is a temple of precision and care. It works on the principle of gravity – the grapes and must are not pumped, but glide gently from one level to the next. This technique preserves the delicate fruit and elegance, especially in the lively white wines, which find their clarity in modern steel tanks.
This coexistence of an old soul and a modern mind is not a contradiction, but rather the foundation of the Walch philosophy.
The legacy in the glass: typicality and precision
The Wilhelm Walch winery stands for the typicality of South Tyrol. The focus is on local grape varieties that bring character and homeland to the glass:
· Gewürztraminer, the royal grape of Tramin, with its beguiling aromas.
· The delicately bitter Lagrein or the fruity Vernatsch, the soul of South Tyrolean red wines.
· Elegant Pinot Blancs and powerful Chardonnays that bear the mineral signature of the Dolomite soils.
These classic wines are interpreted in a modern, straightforward and extremely precise style. They are clear, focused and radiate an unmistakable freshness – a direct echo of the cool mountain nights and the careful work in the cellar.
A community that has been supporting the estate for generations
One of the estate's special treasures is its connection to the region. For generations, around 100 local winegrowing families have been supplying the estate with their carefully cultivated grapes. These long-standing partnerships form a network of trust and shared knowledge. They complement the estate's own vineyards and ensure that every Wilhelm Walch wine expresses the full diversity of the Tramin and Kaltern terroir.
